I really can't trust a closed source solution. I've seen what Volkswagen did and I am convinced that every company does stuff like this when they can be sure that nobody can have a look. It is a nice gesture by Apple that they try to fight the political fight, but I think they will lose and they'll be forced to not tell anyone.

I agree. That's why added one more paragraph to the note. Even if it's just some marketing stunt and people will notice, and Apple can make human arguments (which we all are obviously unable to come up with – and spread), it's a good thing and we all support it. I'm not saying you should trust them, but if they fight for a good cause, supporting them might help.
